Announcing the Nominations for the 2017 Grammy Awards!

Well, it’s just about that time again. The 59th annual Grammy awards are here, and with the way things have been going lately, I think it’s about time we had a little distraction. For 57 years the Grammy’s have been a time for us to get to together and celebrate the musical talent that got our feet tapping and our heads nodding over the past year. Lately it’s also been a time for us to see which stars will kiss, and which stars will do the most outrageous thing. I’m looking at you Wu-Tang Clan (I bet you guys thought I was gonna say Kanye huh? What? No one remembers when a Wu-Tang member stormed the stage in ‘98?).

It’s coming up to February 12, so let’s stop and take a look at a chunk of this year’s Grammy awards nominees and Grammy awards categories!

Album of the year

Adele is going to show up on a number of lists, as will Beyonce. These two will be hard to beat as their vocals have continued to shape the music scene for a number of years now and the academy loves them. Beyonce let the world know she was still just as fierce with the (Jay-Z call out?) Lemonade. Adele continued her ascension to goddess-hood with 25. Drake, Justin Bieber, and Sturgill Simpson will all be looking to dethrone the queen for album of the year. (Read about last year’s Album of the year winner Taylor Swift.) I’m pulling for an upset by Sturgill Simpson, even though I’ve probably only listened to like 10 minutes of his music. I’m a barn burner like that.

Drake: Views
Justin Bieber: Purpose
Sturgill Simpson: A Sailor’s Guide To Earth
Adele: 25
Beyoncé: Lemonade

Record Of The Year

The Grammy awards record of the year includes the biggest hits from Beyonce and Adele’s albums of course, while Lukas Graham, Rihanna, and Twenty One Pilots all get the honor of the other choices. While the Twenty One Pilots’ Stressed Out and Lukas Graham’s 7 Years should probably get some awards for the sheer volume of plays they got in public places (if there was an overplayed award…). I think Adele’s and Beyonce’s songs were far superior – as much as I hate to admit it.

Lukas Graham: 7 Years
Twenty One Pilots: Stressed Out
Adele: Hello
Beyoncé: Formation
Rihanna Featuring Drake: Work

Song of the Year

If you don’t understand the difference between record of the year and song of the year, you’re not alone. Record of the year takes into account the artist’s performance as well as the contribution of the producers. Song of the year is a reflection purely of the songwriter. With that said, Adele’s Hello, Beyonce’s Formation, and Lukas Graham’s 7 Years are on this list. The significant change in this category is the addition of songs by Mike Posner and Justin Bieber.

Mike Posner: I Took A Pill In Ibiza”
Justin Bieber: Love Yourself
Lukas Graham: 7 Years
Beyoncé: Formation
Adele: Hello

Best New Artist

People like to say winning this award is actually more of a curse than a blessing. Legend holds that the one who wins this award is doomed to burn out and fade away quickly. While this has definitely happened to some Grammy awards winners for best new artist, thanks, Milli Vanilli, others like Maroon 5 and Adele have shown it to be only a legend. Regardless of how many supernatural forces take their cues from the Grammy’s – I have high hopes for the futures of this year’s stock of new artists.

Chance The Rapper
Anderson .Paak
Kelsea Ballerini
The Chainsmokers
Maren Morris

There are dozens of categories, but for brevity, we will instead focus on the albums for each genre for the remainder of this article. We could list every award from Best Children’s Album to Best Remixed Recording, but honestly, if you’re that interested in your favorite niche genre’s moment in the limelight, you probably don’t need me to tell you about it.

Best Pop Vocal Album

I always found Pop to be a little too general for my liking, but I guess how else you would classify Demi Lovato’s music? Adele’s 25 make this list and may be a shoo-in, but Justin Bieber may come in for the upset. Read Justin Bieber’s story here on Geeker.

Ariana Grande: Dangerous Woman
Demi Lovato: Confident
Adele: 25
Justin Bieber: Purpose
Sia: This Is Acting

Best pop vocal album

Best Dance/Electronic Album

Tycho: Epoch
Underworld: Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future
Louie Vega: Louie Vega Starring…XXVIII
Flume: Skin
Jean-Michel Jarre: Electronica 1: The Time Machine

Best Rock Album

I’m a huge Cage the Elephant fan; this is probably the award I have the most emotional involvement in. Something about Blink 182, Weezer and Panic! At the Disco winning any more rock awards really rubs me the wrong way.

Gojira: Magma
Panic! At The Disco: Death Of A Bachelor
Weezer: Weezer
Blink-182: California
Cage The Elephant: Tell Me I’m Pretty

Best Rap Album

Drake: Views
ScHoolboy Q: Blank Face LP
Kanye West: The Life of Pablo
Chance The Rapper: Coloring Book
De La Soul: And the Anonymous Nobody
DJ Khaled: Major Key

Best Country Album

Maren Morris: Hero
Sturgill Simpson: A Sailor’s Guide To Earth
Keith Urban: Ripcord
Brandy Clark: Big Day In A Small Town
Loretta Lynn: Full Circle

You can find some more exhaustive lists out there, but I believe we’ve covered the awards you are most likely to see on the live showing, as well as those most likely to make the headlines the next day. Happy viewing!
