Katharine Houghton Hepburn was an actress who wowed and wooed audiences with her fierce demeanor and independent attitude. She has been named by the American Film Institute as Classic Hollywood Cinema’s greatest female star.
Contrary to that title, Hepburn lived a relatively private and independent life and bucked many of the prevailing trends of the time. For a Hollywood starlet at the height of the glamorous period, she persisted with wearing trousers and was rather proud of her “dirty fingernails”. She was so private that her real birthday was never revealed until the Katharine Hepburn biography was released.

This independent streak and her overall uniqueness would make for a lifetime of standout qualities and stances worth celebrating. Although a feminist (something we will talk about in a bit) she also devoted 27 years of her personal life, and took five years away from her career, to care for her married co-star Spencer Tracy. One could say it was a life of contradictions, but that would ignore the consistency of one so driven by a personal desire to do things her way.

Now without any more preamble, here are our reasons we fall in love with Katharine Hepburn:
1. Katharine Hepburn Movies Netted Her 4 Academy Awards, and She Never Showed Up
While an award isn’t something that should automatically warrant love or adoration, four of some of the most prestigious awards in acting should at least help nudge that barometer. Morning Glory, Hepburn’s third movie cemented her as a star. It was her first academy award for best actress. In none of her winnings did she choose to attend the actual award ceremonies.
2. She was a “Radical” Feminist
Katherine eschewed modern sensibilities and chose to dress and act her way. Wearing trousers more often than not and being outspoken for women’s reproductive rights, she was celebrated for bringing many feminist ideas to the big screen. While some attacked her for claiming women “can’t have it all” meaning family and career (she chose not to have children as she believed it was a full-time job) she was nonetheless a wholehearted supporter of feminine empowerment in almost every other train of thought.
Katharine Hepburn’s favorite, Little Women, is touted as a feminist movie for many reasons. Mainly due to the fact that it goes against the idea of a patriarchal version of a family by portraying a series of close female bonds. She identified most with the character of this movie. 3. She Made Timeless the Faux-Accent of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Though it is the subject of numerous SNL skits by now, that faux-British accent Hollywood starlets were known for will forever be tied to her name. A carry over from the transition from silent films to “talkies”, Hollywood needed a way to glamourize and put on a pedestal its stars. In came the glamorous Hollywood accent.
With Katherine Hepburn, the accent reached perfection which isn’t surprising given how hard she worked to develop it. With the death of that pattern of speech in the culture, she will always be one of the few who spoke in the golden Hollywood accent.
4. She Was Truly Loyal to Those She Loved.
The famous Katharine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy affair is not a typical love story. He was married, although separated from his wife, and she was a devout career woman. Luckily the career part didn’t hinder it much since they made nine movies together over the span of 27 years.
Though they kept their relationship secret, those who saw them together could see the apparent amount of love and dependence they had for one another. Only after the death of both Spencer Tracy and his wife did Katharine divulge more info about their relationship.
5. She Did it Her Way
As Frank Sinatra would say “I Did it My Way”. She lived a life that was full and her own. She bucked convention and stood for what she believed. Though that is something we all strive for, how many of us can say it is something we have indeed achieved? She can, and we should all love her and follow her example for it.
